Nissan has long relied on hybrid technology that was purchased and licensed from Toyota. While acquiring hybrid tech from the hybrid leader isn’t necessarily a bad idea, Nissan is looking to forge its own path when it comes to hybrid propulsion, and this new system will find its way into an Infiniti model first, according to Infiniti Boston MA.

The upcoming M35 Hybrid will feature the first hybrid system developed by Nissan. According to Reuters, the system will differ greatly from Toyota’s full hybrid and Honda’s mild hybrid architecture. As a result, it may offer even stronger fuel economy than competing systems.

“Typically, carmakers say the fuel economy improvement on their cars using a ‘strong’ or ‘full’ hybrid system is roughly 30 percent, while for ‘mild’ hybrids, it’s 15 percent. We’re aiming for an improvement of 60 to 90 percent,” says Koichi Hayasaki, Nissan’s chief engineer of its rear-wheel-drive hybrid system.

Nissan Dealership Tacoma said that Nissan’s system will use a single electric motor and twin clutches which is said to make the system simpler and lighter compared to other hybrid systems. It will also feature lithium ion batteries rather than more cost-effective nickel meta hydride cells.
